Not to admire it. To actually update it.

Most people never do. They write a post, hit publish, feel productive, and move straight on to the next one. Meanwhile that older post is drifting down the rankings and nobody’s watching.

That’s a shame, because the biggest growth lever for most sites isn’t the next new post. It’s the 50 you’ve already got. HubSpot’s own content team found that updating and republishing old posts increased their organic traffic by as much as 106%. Free traffic, from work you already did.

So let me walk through how I actually approach a content refresh strategy, and how to decide what to fix, what to rebuild, and what to bin.

What content decay actually is

Content decay is the slow slide a page takes after its peak. It ranked, it pulled traffic, then over months it slipped as competitors published fresher pieces, the topic moved on, or Google’s understanding of the query changed.

It’s completely normal. Almost every page decays eventually. The problem is that most sites let it happen without noticing, then wonder why traffic is flat despite publishing constantly.

And the maths is a bit mad. Semrush found that only 50% of marketers update content once it becomes outdated, with another chunk barely touching old posts at all. So half your competitors are ignoring their own back catalogue. That’s your opening.

How to find your decaying posts

You don’t need fancy tools for this. Google Search Console does most of the job.

Open the Performance report and set it to compare the last 6 months against the previous 6 months.

Sort by clicks, and look for pages where clicks have dropped the most.

Those declining-but-still-ranking pages are your priority. They already have authority and history, so a good refresh pays back fast.

Also flag pages sitting in positions 5 to 15. They’re close to page one and often just need a nudge to break through.

When a client asks where to start with content, I almost always point them backwards before forwards. There’s usually a post from 18 months ago sitting in position 8 that a single afternoon of updating could push into the top three. That’s a faster win than anything you’ll write from scratch this month.” Becky Halls, Strategist at 3Way Social

Update, rewrite, or delete

Once you’ve got your list, every page falls into one of three buckets. This is the whole framework, and it saves you from the trap of rewriting everything.

Update

For most posts, a genuine refresh is enough. Old stats swapped for current ones. New sections for angles that have appeared since. Better internal links to your newer content. A sharper intro. Fresh screenshots.

This is where the speed comes from. Backlinko famously updated existing content and saw a 260.7% jump in organic traffic in 14 days. Not from a rewrite. From a proper update to a page that already existed.

Aleyda Solis, one of the sharpest SEO consultants around, makes the point that you don’t need to keep inventing:

“Content doesn’t need to be about a completely new topic in order to be successful and connect with your audience in a relevant and meaningful way that provides value.” (aleydasolis.com)

Rewrite or consolidate

Sometimes an update won’t cut it. The post is thin, the advice has aged badly, or you’ve got three overlapping posts all half-ranking for the same thing and competing with each other.

That’s when you rewrite, or better, merge them. Take the three weak posts, combine the best of each into one strong page, and redirect the other two into it. One authoritative page usually beats three mediocre ones fighting over the same keyword.

Delete and redirect

And some posts should just go. A time-limited announcement from 2021. An event write-up nobody searches for. A topic you no longer cover.

Pruning dead weight can genuinely help the rest of your site, because it focuses Google’s attention on the pages that matter. Redirect anything with a few backlinks to a relevant live page so you keep the link value. Let the truly useless ones 404 or 410.

“When you refresh a page, help Google notice. Resubmit it in Search Console, make sure it’s in your sitemap with an accurate lastmod date, and check nothing is blocking the crawl. A great update that never gets recrawled might as well not have happened. Getting reindexed quickly is half the win.” Peter Fox, Head of Dev Team at 3Way Social

How to actually refresh a post

A repeatable checklist beats a vague “make it better.” Mine looks like this:

Re-check the search intent. Search the target keyword today and see what’s ranking. If the top results are all listicles and yours is a how-to, that’s your first fix.

Update every stat and date, and link to current sources.

Add what’s missing. New subtopics, new questions people ask, an FAQ.

Improve internal links, both to and from the post.

Tighten the intro and the title. Old titles are often the easiest quick win.

Refresh images and add alt text.

Republish, then resubmit in Search Console.

One more thing worth its own line, because it trips people up.

Don’t just change the date

Please don’t swap the publish date to today and call it refreshed. Google can tell, readers can tell, and it does nothing for rankings. Worse, it erodes trust when someone lands on a “2026 guide” that clearly hasn’t been touched since 2022.

Change the date because you changed the content. There’s real payoff for doing it properly, too: updated posts have been shown to convert 27% better than brand-new content on the same topic, probably because they’ve had time to earn links and trust.

Content refresh strategy – FAQ

How often should I refresh my content?
Audit your top pages every 3 to 6 months, and check the whole site at least once a year. High-traffic and fast-moving posts (anything with stats, prices, or tools) need it more often than evergreen explainers.

Should I keep the same URL when I refresh a post?
Yes, wherever you can. The URL holds the page’s history and backlinks. Change the content freely, but keep the URL. If you must change it, set up a 301 redirect.

Is it better to update old posts or write new ones?
Do both, but if you’re short on time, updating usually wins first. It’s faster, it builds on existing authority, and the payback tends to come quicker. New content matters for covering fresh topics.

Will refreshing content help me show up in AI answers too?
It tends to, yes. Fresher, accurate pages are easier for both search engines and AI tools to trust and cite. Good upkeep helps you across the board, without you having to chase it separately.

How do I know if a refresh worked?
Watch the page in Search Console for 4 to 8 weeks after republishing. Look for rising impressions, a better average position, and more clicks. Give it time; reindexing and re-ranking aren’t instant.

Written by the team at 3way.social. Becky Halls leads strategy and has a soft spot for the quiet workhorse posts everyone else forgets.

Quick question… When did you last open a blog post you published two years ago?
