For about two years, “how much traffic am I getting from AI search visibility?” was the question nobody could really answer. You could feel it happening. Your impressions looked healthy, your clicks sagged, and somewhere out there ChatGPT was summarising your hard-won blog post to someone who never visited it. Frustrating, and completely invisible!
That changed this year. As of 31 August 2026, Google finished rolling out its Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console to every website worldwide, which means the data you’ve been guessing at is now sitting in a tab you already have access to. If you haven’t looked yet, go have a peek!
What Google actually added
Google introduced the reports on 3 June 2026 and spent the summer expanding them globally. In plain terms, you now get a dedicated view of how your content shows up inside generative AI features on Search, specifically AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus generative AI features in Discover.
There’s one catch worth understanding before you get excited: the report shows impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates, but it does not break out click data separately for AI Overviews. AI Mode is a bit more generous. When someone clicks an external link inside AI Mode, that counts as a click in Search Console, your impression is logged when your page appears in the AI response, and position is calculated the same way as standard results.
So it’s not a perfect picture. But it’s the first official one we’ve had, and “imperfect and real” beats “invented and reassuring” every time.
Why this matters more than it looks
Here’s the context that makes this a big deal rather than a minor feature note. AI search is still small as a share of overall web traffic, but it is not staying small. Traffic from AI search engines to websites grew 16x between 2024 and 2026, climbing to around 0.32% of all website traffic. That number sounds tiny until you remember it was 0.02% two years ago, and that these visitors tend to arrive further down the funnel, having already had their question half-answered.
The point isn’t the current volume. It’s the trajectory, and the fact that you can finally attach numbers to it. As Aleyda Solís, one of the sharpest voices on AI search, put it on X this year: “In practice, I don’t really care what optimizing for AI Search is called: SEO, AI Search Optimization, AEO, GEO, or whatever the new acronym ends up being.” The label matters far less than whether you’re measuring the thing at all.
Which brings us to this: Most sites still aren’t. They’re optimising for AI visibility with the same instrument a weather forecaster would use if you took away their thermometer and handed them a wet finger.
How to read your new AI reports
Open Search Console, head to the Performance section, and look for the generative AI views. Here’s a sensible way to work through them rather than staring blankly at another graph.
Start with impressions, not panic. Rising AI impressions mean Google is increasingly pulling your content into AI answers. That’s a foundation. It says your pages are considered relevant and trustworthy enough to feature, even if the click hasn’t followed yet.
Compare AI impressions to your traditional impressions for the same queries. If you’re appearing heavily in AI responses for a topic but your classic clicks are falling, that topic is being “answered away” before the click. That’s your signal to shift the content’s job, from delivering the quick answer to being the obvious next step once the quick answer isn’t enough.
Segment by page. Some of your pages will be AI darlings and some will be invisible. Look at what the favoured ones have in common. Usually it’s clear structure, a genuine answer near the top, specific data, and a sense that a real human who knows the subject wrote it.
Watch AI Mode clicks specifically. Because these are counted, they’re your cleanest read on whether AI search is sending you actual humans. Treat that number as the one to grow.
“The mistake I see is teams treating the AI reports as a vanity metric. Cross-reference AI impressions against your log files and your schema coverage. If a page is being cited in AI answers but your structured data is thin, you’re leaving attribution and click-through on the table. Becky Halls, Local SEO at Beckyhalls.com
Turning the data into actual decisions
Measurement is only useful if it changes what you do next. A few practical moves once you can see your AI search visibility:
Prioritise pages that already earn AI impressions but few clicks, and add reasons to click: original data, tools, templates, calculators, the stuff a summary can’t replicate. Strengthen the pages that get cited by making them more quotable, with crisp definitions, clear stats and clean headings that map to real questions. And keep an eye on which of your pages get name-checked across the wider web, because being mentioned in the sources AI models trust is a large part of why you show up in the first place.
“The businesses that win the next few years won’t be the ones shouting loudest about AI. They’ll be the ones quietly measuring where they show up, then earning the mentions and links that make them the obvious answer. Visibility follows trust, and trust is still built the old-fashioned way, just measured with better tools now.” Ian Naylor, Founder of 3Way.Social
None of this replaces the fundamentals. You still need content worth citing, a technically sound site, and a credible presence across the web that AI models can lean on. What’s changed is that you can finally check whether any of it is working, in a report Google hands you for free. That’s a decent Monday.
AI Search Visibility – FAQ
Where do I find the AI reports in Search Console?
In the Performance area of Search Console. Google has rolled out dedicated generative AI performance views globally as of late August 2026, covering AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover.
Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews?
Not as a separate broken-out metric. You’ll see impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI Overviews. AI Mode is different: clicks on external links there are counted as clicks in Search Console.
Is AI search traffic big enough to bother with?
As a share of total traffic it’s still small, but it grew 16x between 2024 and 2026 and skews toward higher-intent visitors. The smart play is to start measuring now while it’s cheap to learn, not once everyone else has caught on.
What’s the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional results. AI Mode is a fuller conversational search experience. Both now report into Search Console, with AI Mode giving you clearer click data.
How is position calculated in AI Mode?
Google calculates position in AI Mode much like standard search results, so you can benchmark your AI Mode presence against your classic rankings for the same queries.
Do I need a separate tool to track AI search visibility?
Third-party tools add useful context, especially for tracking mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. But Search Console is now the free, authoritative starting point for how you appear in Google’s own AI features, and it’s where most people should begin.
